The short film I chose to help influence my film is Wild Gone Girls by Paul MCcathy made in 1945. The short film depicts different young women in a confined area (looks somewhat like a construction site) partying but also physically torturing a man. While the women at first don’t seem to be masochists, they begin to accelerate their drinking and infliction of pain. Though the video is a bit disturbing the actresses make their actions seem very normal, as they laugh and sip on champagne they also take a hammer to the mans kneecap. I tried to capture the feel I received from watching the film, but the use of confined space was my main initiative. I also used the idea of acceleration, so the film advanced into something it wasn’t exactly at first. I also really enjoyed the comfortable personality the actresses portrayed and attempted to reflect that within my work.
I applied two behaviors on my project, I tried to keep the work as simple as possible while getting the message across. I added a variable blur that fogged the edge but kept the center clear and a sepia coating to keep the look consistent. The behaviors worked well with the coloring of the elevator and the fly on the wall appearance I was aiming for.
While in the elevator I attempted to use the small space to see how others would interact with each other. There are shorts I shot with one to many people and no conversation to a group of individuals chatting and fighting. I tried to order the shorts into accelerating action, similar to the Wild Gone Girls. It interesting to see how people act in a claustrophobic area when they think no one is watching them or when they are with strangers or friends. I believe I depicted the simplicity of human life while trapped in a steel box propelling you down 120 feet, I find it quite amusing how calm everyone acts while they know that.
